This gorgeous Julius Holland Superwax print has been designed by Julius Holland for their 2020-21 collection. It utilizes their new, densely woven 100% cotton base cloth, specific to Superwax. This year’s fabric has a particularly “crisp” hand, which makes it perfect for bagmaking! (This is due only to the sizing/starch used and will wash out if you prefer more drape).
The technique uses a special two-color crackling effect to achieve the depth of texture and design you’ll only find in Superwax fabrics. Julius Holland has been emerging in the world of wax prints since 2002.
Wax printing is a technique inspired by Indonesian Batik. The wax is applied as a resist and the fabric is dipped in the first dye color. The wax is removed and re-applied for subsequent color applications. Superwax fabrics have an extra process of cracking the wax for some color dips to achieve the delicious crackled background you’ll see. Due to this intensive process, the colors are stunningly vibrant and completely impregnate the fabric so that there is no right or wrong side to the fabric. What this means for your bags or other products is that the colors are incredibly long-lasting and resist fading.
